“This book is an incredibly vital read for everyone, not only women, especially now when women's rights are being devalued and decided upon by a patriarchal regime. The book talks about one woman's exhaustive fight to get men and authority figures to see sexual assault as a valid crime, to take victim's testimonies seriously, and to provide as many paths as possible for victims and survivors to seek the help they need. ”

“I had heard a podcast about Marty Goddard, so when I saw this audiobook I knew I would find it interesting. What I didn’t anticipate was the sense of melancholy brought on by the facts of Marty’s life. As with many people advocating for others, especially female advocates in the man’s world of the 1970s and 1980s, Marty faced apathy, racism and sexism throughout her fight to get a universal rape kit implemented by law enforcement and hospitals. This relentless fight, often to little or no avail, eventually led to burnout. This was not an easy book to digest. Between Ms Goddard’s advocacy fight, her personal life, and the author’s own experiences with sexual molestation, the subject matter is often difficult and trigger inducing. But in the end I found the entire story compelling.”

“What an incredible tale, so well written, great style and fascinating content. Wow, Marty Godddard, what a woman. Several notes, Pagan Kennedy has done so much research, has told the story in a compelling way and having Clare Danes narrate was a treat. This is my favourite non-fiction book I have ever read or listened too. I think we should give thanks to the story of Marty the Martyr!”

“This book is as eye-opening as it is enraging. Pagan Kennedy delivers a deeply researched and compelling narrative about the creation of the rape kit—something that should have revolutionized how sexual assault cases are handled. Instead, we get a disturbing look at how bureaucracy, negligence, and systemic misogyny turned an essential forensic tool into a symbol of justice delayed (or outright denied). ✔ Meticulously researched, but reads like a thriller ✔ Profiles the brilliant, largely unrecognized nurse behind the kit ✔ Calls out the failures of law enforcement and the justice system Claire Danes’ narration adds a quiet urgency to the audiobook, making the story feel even more immediate. If you’re interested in true crime that focuses on justice rather than glorifying perpetrators, this is a must-read. Final thoughts: The Secret History of the Rape Kit is infuriating, essential, and a call to action.”

“An absolutely eye opening history of the rape kit, and a fascinating history touching on racism, police brutality and negligence, inequity for women, and more. Its accessible format leaves it open to many types of readers, non-fiction fans or not, to be engaged and become informed. TW: Rape, Sexual Assault, Molestation, Manipulation”

“How to say you loved a book with a subject like this? Love doesn’t give the right feeling nor would it be enough to describe a book with such a heavy subject. I did not know this story - like many, I think. We always say women are forgotten in history and it feels like we’re just discovering all the powerful women who have lived and fought for our world. This is a biography about Marty Goddard and at the same time a biography about the author. She takes us on her journey to find out all she can about Marty and also shows her own battles she had to fight. It’s such a powerful & brave story, one that will anger you. It will leave you speechless for all the things that have happened and unfortunately, are still happening. The narrator of the story was the right fit for the importance of this story. ”

“I thought I knew a lot about this subject after writing a book on rape culture, but Pagan Kennedy's research illuminates a lot of hidden corners. The story of Marty Goddard (and her digital-era counterparts, still trying to make evidence collection less traumatic for victim/survivors) is as compelling as it is infuriating. ”

“Rape kits have always been something I was aware of and have taken advantage of having access to. The increase of true crime interest has made us all aware of these tools in our legal system but I’ve never questioned how they got here. I never considered how much advocacy was needed. This is an engaging, devastating, and necessary history of the woman who gave her life to the cause and it is a shame it took so long to learn her name. Thank you Marty Goddard. “I felt I had to save the save the world, and I was going to start with Chicago.””

“Wow… I am completely speechless and not surprised at all by this history being secret/hidden from the world. Pagan Kennedy, thank you. Thank you for being brave and telling your story, and fighting to tell Marty Goddard’s. Your research is very valuable and well done. Fast paced. ”

“The Secret History of the Rape Kit by Pagan Kennedy is a hard read, especially if you're a survivor, but it's such a necessary book. It's a history of how the rape kit came to be, but it's also an examination of the flaws in the system around it. And by the end, you do get to see where they're trying to come up with a better way, so there's some hope. It was infuriating and educational and validating to my own experience. Practice self-care while you read, though. ”

Marty Goddard dreamed up a new crime-solving tool—a kit that could help rape survivors fight for justice. This thrilling investigation tells the story of the troubled, heroic woman who kicked off a feminist revolution in forensics, and then vanished into obscurity.
"Astonishing . . . Marty Goddard takes her rightful place as a visionary thanks to Kennedy’s relentless investigation.”—Rachel Louise Snyder, author of No Visible Bruises
"The Secret History of the Rape Kit is stunning: part thriller, part feminist reclamation, part personal journey, fully a page-turner. How did we not know about Marty Goddard?"—Peggy Orenstein author of Girls & Sex and Boys & Sex
In 1972, Martha "Marty" Goddard volunteered at a crisis hotline, counseling girls who had been molested by their fathers, their teachers, their uncles. Soon, Marty was on a mission to answer a question: Why were so many sexual predators getting away with these crimes? By the end of the decade, she had launched a campaign pushing hospitals and police departments to collect evidence of sexual assault and treat survivors with dignity. She designed a new kind of forensics tool—the rape kit—and new practices around evidence collection that spread across the country. Yet even as Marty fought for women's rights, she allowed a man to take credit for her work.
When journalist Pagan Kennedy went looking for this forgotten pioneer, she discovered that even Marty Goddard's closest friends had lost track of her. As Pagan followed a trail of clues to solve the mystery of Marty, she also delved into the problematic history of forensics in America. The Secret History of the Rape Kit chronicles one journalist's mission to understand a crucial innovation in forensics and the woman who championed it. As Pagan Kennedy hunts for answers, she reflects on her own experiences with sexual assault and her own desire for justice.

Reviews
“Fascinating . . . Incandescent . . . Kennedy’s love for her subject reverberates throughout the book.”—New York Times Book Review“Kennedy works deftly with sometimes scant information, weaving her reporting on Goddard’s life and contribution into the narrative. . . . A page-turning mystery. . . . Thanks to Kennedy’s dogged reporting . . . Goddard can step out from the shadows of history. . . . Yet Kennedy’s book isn’t just the hero’s journey of a forgotten heroine. It acknowledges that the system works best when it can be improved by those who are most affected by sexual assault—and the women who are willing to risk obscurity or damage to their reputation in order to finish the job Goddard started.”
—The Atlantic
“If the criminal-justice landscape for rape victims remains objectively terrible, it is somewhat less terrible because of Marty Goddard and her comrades in the anti-rape movement of the seventies and eighties. Goddard, who faded into alcoholism and mental illness toward the end of her life, is the tragic heroine of “The Secret History of the Rape Kit.” . . . This narrative of gendered injustice and the redemptive power of feminist history has an almost mythical force.”—New Yorker
"Pagan Kennedy’s book is astonishing in every way that matters. The Secret History of the Rape Kit is the story of hidden genius and the centuries-long fight for women to simply be recognized and heard. Marty Goddard as a footnote in history takes her rightful place as a visionary thanks to Kennedy’s relentless investigation. This book is gripping, vulnerable, assured and way overdue.”
—Rachel Louise Snyder, author of Women We Buried, Women We Burned and No Visible Bruises
“In The Secret History of the Rape Kit, Pagan Kennedy deftly weaves genres to create an absolutely compelling book that melds true crime, memoir, biography, social history and a personal, impassioned quest. I raced through it, gripped from start to finish.”
—Kate Moore, New York Times bestselling author of The Radium Girls and The Woman They Could Not Silence
"The Secret History of the Rape Kit is stunning: part thriller, part feminist reclamation, part personal journey, fully a page-turner. How did we not know about Marty Goddard? How have we not recognized her crucial role in establishing rape as an actual crime? I finished this book angry and inspired, but mostly grateful to both Marty Goddard and Pagan Kennedy for their brave and brilliant work."
—Peggy Orenstein author of Girls & Sex and Boys & Sex
“The Secret History of the Rape Kit” is a relatively slender book, but it packs a punch. It’s an important investigation of a complex inventor, her flawed but revolutionary technology, and how it has never been allowed to live up to her hopes for it.”
—The Washington Post
“Heartening . . . Kennedy might not have been able to find Goddard but avenge her she has. This book (and a quick internet search where the invention of the rape kit is now correctly attributed to her) is proof.”
—Boston Globe
“There is an underlying anger to [The Secret History of the Rape Kit] that snaps and sparks in the pages—for good reason . . . Kennedy’s tale is far more than a screed. It is a mystery, a complicated history, a compassionate story of struggle and loss, and a deeply moral inquiry . . . Kennedy deftly pulls these threads together, leading us to her primary point—that when asked to defend women from male assault, our justice system is reluctant at best and hostile at worst. And perhaps that, as she eloquently reminds us, is the real true crime, the secret we do not want to acknowledge, the failure at the heart of this story.”
—Science Magazine
“Powerfully eye-opening . . . Vivid and informative . . . The Secret History of the Rape Kit is fundamental reading for anyone who wants to understand something about social justice, women's rights, and what the real struggle against sexual violence is. Resilience, courage, and the pursuit of truth-it's highly recommended!”
—Suspense Magazine
“Exhilarating . . . Part historical detective story and part vivid character study of a pioneering feminist, this is a page-turner.”
—Publishers Weekly [starred]
“Kennedy’s tenacious sleuthing reveals a surprising portrait of a defiant, troubled, and mysterious woman. Absorbing detective work.”
