“For one, Jason Clarke and Samantha Brentmoor are top tier. The absolute perfect Gus and Teddy. I’m actually so obsessed with Samantha’s accent and it made my heart eyes for Teddy probably as big as Gus’s. This story has so much depth to it that you wouldn’t expect from a small town/cowboy romance. Yes, it’s babysitter/single dad; grumpy/sunshine (kind of); very steamy. And that is all incredibly done. The sexual tension between these two is palpable from page ONE. And the payoff from the slow burn is so good I’ll be thinking about it forever. BUT - this is a story about family. Blood and found and blended. It’s about friendships and how they change and adapt as you grow and how lonely and scary it is when your best friend finds their happy ever after before you do. It’s about the responsibility children put on themselves to take care of their parents once they’re grown and watch the strongest people of their lives become not so strong anymore. I have a SLEW of daddy issues, that’s clear. But Teddy’s relationship with Hank, and Gus’s relationship with Amos healed a little part of me. The weight we carry, as only children or as eldest children, to take care of everyone around us is so real. And Lyla Sage illustrates it so beautifully, interwoven in Gus and Teddy’s love story. And she puts it in much better words in her author’s note, which was so incredible to hear in her voice at the end of the audiobook. ”
