Dreams of glory and battle turn to dust when one young Dubliner is faced by the harsh reality of war.

It is 1916 and Europe is at war: Jimmy Conway’s father is fighting for the British Army in France. Jimmy dreams of becoming a soldier and winning glory on the battlefield. Then rebellion breaks out in Dublin and Jimmy witnesses the taking of the General Post Office. Soon buildings are destroyed and people are killed. His uncle Mick is among the rebels. Where do Jimmy’s loyalties lie now?

In an attempt to find food for his family, Jimmy crosses the battle-scarred city, weaving through army patrols and dodging shooting. He sees strange and terrible sights. And at every corner danger threatens.

Gerard Whelan was born in Enniscorthy, County Wexford, and has lived and worked in several European countries. After some time living in Dublin, he has returned to live in his native Wexford. He is the author of many books for children and a multiple award-winner. His first novel, The Guns of Easter, won the Eilís Dillon Memorial Award for first-time writers. Dream Invader later won the Bisto Book of the Year Award. He has also been shortlisted for the Reading Association of Ireland awards. Gerard is also the author of A Winter of Spies and Out of Nowhere.

Irish-born Stephen Hogan was trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He went on to perform at the Royal National Theatre in London and the prestigious Abbey and Gaiety Theatres in Dublin. By 1993 he was working on screen, first in HBO’s The Tudors and then moving on to his first movie appearance in the cult sci-fi trilogy epic Starship Troopers 3: Marauder. He has also appeared in episodes of the TV series Injustice and secured a role in the television movie Saving the Titanic.
