“Jesuits in space! A philosophical, psychological, moral, theological, anthropological science fiction novel that explores the intersections of science and faith, this book asks all the big questions and resolutely faces all the sweetest and most bitter moments that arise from great discovery and horrifying sacrifice. This novel is a true work of art and won all the big science fiction awards upon its publication. Itโs an utterly brilliant, wondrous, and harrowing tale that will leave you both satisfied and shaken. ”

“Science fiction as a genre is so often brushed aside in the literary world as, at best, a fun opiate of the masses to entertain rather than interrogate the nature of human existence. How can aliens and lasers say anything to the conditions of the psyche? To that I say, read this book! It follows a team of Russellโs work exemplifies the best of science fiction, where a journey to a new planet is also a quest for meaning, for identity, for love. It asks, what would you sacrifice in pursuit of your dreams, or in service to your God? The story gives no easy answers, and its strength lies in that ultimate sci-fi question of, โWhat if?โ. If youโre looking for a deeply moving book that will make you laugh, cry, and search your soul, this is the one you have been searching for.”

A visionary work that combines speculative fiction with deep philosophical inquiry, The Sparrow tells the story of a charismatic Jesuit priest and linguist, Emilio Sandoz, who leads a scientific mission entrusted with a profound task: to make first contact with intelligent extraterrestrial life. The mission begins in faith, hope, and beauty, but a series of small misunderstandings brings it to a catastrophic end.
