Kate Chopin is a widely considered a forerunner to the feminist authors of the twentieth century. Focusing on themes of race and gender, her short stories largely center on life in rural Louisiana. In "A Pair of Silk Stockings," a young woman unexpected finds herself with fifteen dollars. Inspired by her newfound wealth, she ignores her natural impulses and indulges in a day of luxurious abandon. A wistful rumination on loss and the illusion of control, "A Pair of Silk Stockings" is Chopin at her absolute best.

Kate Chopin (1851โ€“1901) was born Katherine Oโ€™Flaherty in St. Louis in 1851. She was a popular social belle, admired for her wit and beauty. In 1871 she married Oscar Chopin and lived in Louisiana until his sudden death in 1882. Chopin began writing about the Creole and Cajun people in the South, gaining acclaim for her finely crafted short stories. Upon publication in 1899, her now-classic novel The Awakening was widely condemned for its controversial themes, and Chopin was devastated by its harsh critical reception. She died in 1904, denied in her lifetime the recognition she desperately wanted and richly deserved.

Arielle DeLisle is an Earphones Awardโ€“winning narrator, voice actor, and commercial producer. She has recorded more than sixty audiobooks, including dystopian young adult titles and Michael Wallaceโ€™s Righteous series.
