Minerva Parkinson has just received distressing news: she's dying. Though she and her husband Henry have been married for many years, their marriage has grown listless, and she therefore chooses to keep her dire prognosis to herself.

With the hopes of leaving Henry with fond memories of her, she buys a houseboat to fulfill his dream of a riverboat trip, and they set off down the Missouri River. Things are looking good until they meet two strangers, a young woman named Nora and a mysterious man named Mr. Mortimer, who possesses knowledge beyond the worldly realm. In fact, Mr. Mortimer isn't a man at all but Death in human form, a fact that does not escape Minerva.

When it becomes apparent that there is an attraction between Nora and Henry, Minerva pushes aside her jealousy and focuses on what will make Henry happy when she is gone. But Mr. Mortimer's growing attraction to Minerva becomes an unexpected complication.

Robert Nathan (1894โ€“1985) was born in New York City and educated at private schools in the United States and Switzerland. While attending Harvard, where he was a classmate of E. E. Cummings, he was an editor of the Harvard Monthly, in which his first stories and poems appeared. After becoming a full-time writer, Nathanโ€™s work strengthened his reputation with both the public and peers. F. Scott Fitzgerald once referred to Nathan as his favorite writer. Five of his novels have been made into films, including Portrait of Jennie and The Bishopโ€™s Wife. Nathan ultimately authored more than fifty volumes of novels, poetry, and plays, and from this body of distinguished work he acquired a reputation as a master of satiric fantasy.

Stephen R. Thorne, winner of multiple AudioFile Earphones Awards for narration, is a professional actor and member of the resident acting company at Providenceโ€™s esteemed Trinity Repertory Company, where he has played Hamlet, Henry V, and Tom Joad.
