Bob Odenkirk is a legend in the comedy-writing world, winning Emmys and acclaim for his work on Saturday Night Live, Mr. Show with Bob and David, and many other seminal television shows.

This book, his first, is a spleen-bruisingly funny omnibus that ranges from absurdist monologues ("Martin Luther King Jr.'s Worst Speech Ever") to intentionally bad theater ("Hitler Dinner Party: A Play"), from avant-garde fiction ("Obit for the Creator of Madlibs") to free-verse poetry that's funnier and more powerful than the work of Calvin Trillin, Jewel, and Robert Louis Stevenson combined.

Odenkirk's debut resembles nothing so much as a hilarious new sketch comedy show that's exclusively available as a streaming video for your mind. As Odenkirk himself writes in "The Second Meeting of Jesus and Lazarus," it is a book "to be read aloud to yourself in the voice of Bob Newhart."

Bob Odenkirk is an actor, comedian, writer, director, and producer. He got his start in improv comedy in the motley Chicago comedy scene of the mid-eighties and went on to write for Saturday Night Live. He has starred in AMCโ€™s Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul and written and starred in the sketch comedy cult hit Mr. Show.ย He has written and produced a number of television shows and directed three films.

David Cross, a stand-up comedian, has appeared on several television programs, including Mr. Show and Arrested Development. His book I Drink for a Reason was a New York Times bestseller. Though born in Atlanta, he is an avid Red Sox fan.

Megan Amram is a writer for the NBC comedy Parks and Recreation. Since she graduated from Harvard in 2010, she has amassed nearly 400,000 Twitter followers who enjoy her hilarious brand of off-beat humor. Her writing has appeared in McSweeneyโ€™s, Vulture, and The Awl, among others. Her viral video โ€œBirth Control on the Bottomโ€ prompted Jezebel to call her a โ€œnational treasure.โ€ She lives in Los Angeles.

Reviews

โ€œThe king of alt comedyโ€ฆexpands his reign with this absurd collection of tirades, rhyming verse, and tips on how to avoid getting an embarrassing tattoo.โ€

โ€œA deft blend of silliness and ridicule, mirth and rage: salt augmenting sweetness.โ€

โ€œThe first humor collection from comedian Odenkirk isโ€”to quote Forrest Gumpโ€”like a box of chocolates. That is to say, its thirty-four offerings are small, diverse, and consistently deliciousโ€ฆWhip-smart and laugh-out-loud funny.โ€

โ€œEach skit is performed enthusiastically by a talented cast of narrators. Fans of comedy writer Bob Odenkirk will appreciate that he does much of the narration himself. As graphic language and descriptions abound, sound effects and music enhance each short piece of warped humor. This sketch comedy program is very much for adults only.โ€
