This two-part adult fairytale by the author of The Secret Garden combines a charming Cinderella tale with an ironic look at class structure and the Edwardian marriage market in turn-of-the-century London.

Emily Fox-Seton is a simple but good-hearted woman struggling to make ends meet while maintaining the dignity of one distantly related to the aristocracy. The Marquis of Walderhurst is an awkward but eligible bachelor being comically pursued by a pageant of unmarried ladies. When the Marquis surprises everybody by giving his attentions to Emily, he makes himself a fairy tale prince in her eyes. But marrying her prince is not the end of Emilyโ€™s troubles, as the forces of envy are more cunning and more dangerous than she can yet understand. Will Emilyโ€™s innocence be her downfall after all?

Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849โ€“1924) was an English-born author of romances and books for children. After moving to America in 1865, she established a popular reputation with the publication of That Lass oโ€™ Lowrieโ€™s in 1877. She is best known for such novels as Little Lord Fauntleroy, A Little Princess, and The Secret Garden.

Susan McCarthy is the narrator of numerous audiobooks, including such classics as Jane Austenโ€™s Lady Susan and Sherwood Andersenโ€™s Winesburg, Ohio. Her love for reading began as a young girl, when she discovered the Nancy Drew mystery series and was immediately hooked. Also a voice-over artist, she received her training at VoiceTrax San Francisco.

David Thorn spent his childhood in the Channel Islands off the coast of France, was schooled in England, and then immigrated to the United States at the age of twenty-three. He is retired from international commerce and currently resides in California.

Bobbie Frohman, a third generation Californian, was raised in a large extended family, the niece of cowboys. Early on she developed a deep love of animals, training her dogs to perform with her at dog shows, and as a competitive barrel racer with her beloved horse, Lucky.

Reviews

“A wildly romantic tale whose hero and heroine are totally unromantic.”

โ€œDelightfulโ€ฆA sparky sense of humor combined with lively social commentary make this a joy to read.โ€

โ€œ[A] pretty love story (all the more attractive because of its improbability).โ€

โ€œThe strength of this tale lies in the taking realism with which the romantic plot is clothed.โ€
