A quantum physicist shocks the world with a startling experiment, igniting a struggle between science and theology, free will and fate, and antagonizing forces not known to exist.

Eric Argus is a washout. His prodigious early work clouded his reputation and strained his sanity. But an old friend gives him another chance, an opportunity to step back into the light.

With three months to produce new research, Eric replicates the paradoxical double-slit experiment to see for himself the mysterious dual nature of light and matter. A simple but unprecedented inference blooms into a staggering discovery about human consciousness and the structure of the universe.

His findings are celebrated and condemned in equal measure, but no one can predict where the truth will lead. And as Eric seeks to understand the unfolding revelations, he must evade shadowy pursuers who believe he knows entirely too much already.

Ted Kosmatka was born and raised in Chesterton, Indiana. He is the author of Prophet of Bones and The Games, a finalist for the Locus Award for Best First Novel, and one of Publishers Weeklyā€™s Best Books of 2012. His short fiction has been nominated for both the Nebula and Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award and has appeared in numerous Yearā€™s Best Science Fiction anthologies. He now lives in the Pacific Northwest and works as a writer in the video game industry.

Keith Szarabajka has appeared in many films, including The Dark Knight, Missing, and A Perfect World, and on such television shows as The Equalizer, Angel, Cold Case, Golden Years, and Profit. Szarabajka has also appeared in several episodes of Selected Shorts for National Public Radio. He won the 2001 Audie Award for Unabridged Fiction for his reading of Tom Robbinsā€™s Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates and has won several Earphones Awards.

Reviews

ā€œIf Stephen Hawking and Stephen King wrote a novel together, youā€™d get The Flicker Men. Brilliant, disturbing, and beautifully told.ā€

ā€œA high-speed thrillerā€¦The pages turn rapidly with well-orchestrated suspense.ā€

ā€œAn original, smart physics thrillerā€¦Kosmatka writes with great skill andā€¦sells his concepts so well that itā€™s hard to pinpoint where the real science endsā€¦A fun, exciting read.ā€

ā€œKosmatka has taken a complex scientific paradox and turned it into a rapid race against time.ā€

ā€œSo intriguing that I was able to enjoy the book even though I personally didnā€™t understand all the aspects of the experimentā€¦The story walked a fine line between science and science-fiction, and should please fans of both.ā€

ā€œThe most interesting science thriller Iā€™ve read this yearā€¦The Flicker Men twists the weird implications of the [double-slit] experiment into a narrative that is both surprising and philosophically richā€¦A five-star read.ā€

ā€œKosmatka effectively harnesses his impressive imagination in the service of a mind-blowing plot in this outstanding SF thrillerā€¦Ingenious plot twists, well-realized characters, and superior prose elevate this above similar books.ā€

ā€œBrilliantā€¦This well-written and fast-paced scientific thriller builds into beautiful and suspenseful crescendo.ā€

ā€œA first-rate thriller.ā€

ā€œKosmatkaā€™s novel delivers a number of thrills, along with believable science and ominous themes.ā€

ā€œKeith Szarabajkaā€™s narration captures the intensity of the storyā€¦Szarabajkaā€™s voices are well doneā€”in particular, those of a villain who is hell-bent on obstructing Angusā€™ work, an Indian colleague whose singsong intonation is consistent and appropriate, and a menacing henchmen from Down Under.ā€
