Ryan, Harley, and Miles are very different people—the swimmer, the rebel, and the nerd. All they’ve ever had in common is Isaac, their shared best friend.

When Isaac dies unexpectedly, the three boys must come to terms with their grief and the impact Isaac had on each of their lives. In his absence, Ryan, Harley, and Miles discover things about one another they never saw before and realize there may be more tying them together than just Isaac.

In this intricately woven story told in three parts, award-winning Australian author Will Kostakis makes his American debut with a heartwarming, masterfully written novel about grief, self-discovery, and the connections that tie us all together.

Will Kostakis’ first novel, Loathing Lola, was released when he was just nineteen, and his second, The First Third, won the 2014 Gold Inky Award. It was also shortlisted for the Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Award and Australian Prime Minister’s Literary Award. As a high school student, he won Sydney Morning Herald Young Writer of the Year for a collection of short stories.

David Linski (a.k.a. David Ligudzinski and David Atlas) is a graduate of the prestigious National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney, Australia. He has numerous voice-over credits, an extensive theatrical résumé, and has starred in short and feature films both in the United States and Australia.

Tom Bromhead is a uniquely international voice artist. He now lives in Los Angeles, but having grown up in Australia and England, as well as being a musician, has given him an ear for accents and characters. He has appeared in commercials with Jane Lynch and Mena Suvari and performed voices for animation and video games, including Skylanders, Transformers, and Call of Duty. Tom performed as a stand-up comedian, traveling as far afield as Kuala Lumpur, Darwin, and London. He studied at Richmond Drama School in London and Second City in Los Angeles.

P. J. Ochlan is an actor and voiceover artist who has narrated hundreds of audiobooks and is the recipient of an Audie Award and several AudioFile Earphones Awards.

Reviews

“A hypnotic story of friendship, loss, grief, self-discovery, and—most of all—love.”

“A masterfully written story filled with heart, sorrow, and hope.”

“A poignant exploration of grief.”

“Will Kostakis has written a vibrant, engaging book about relationships, coming out, divorce, and loss—and still managed to work in lots of laughs.”

“Kostakis’s…literary polish and deep understanding of teen storytelling is compelling and nuanced from the first page… An excellent exploration of grief from a rising talent that belongs in all libraries serving teens.”

“Kostakis makes good use of the three characters’ narratives, moving from relatable Ryan to sympathetic Harley and finally the initially unprepossessing Miles, whose inability to wear a social mask and habit of seeing his life as a movie make him a touching narrator.”

“America, you are about to be introduced to the heartfelt, funny, wrenching, and absolutely wonderful work of Will Kostakis. The Sidekicks will make your heart ache for Ryan, Harley, and Miles’ loss, but also for what they gain in themselves and in each other.”
