Learn moreTwo Native American boys have vanished into thin air, leaving a pool of blood behind them. Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Navajo Tribal Police has no choice but to suspect the very worst, since the blood that stains the parched New Mexican ground once flowed through the veins of one of the missing, a young Zuni. But his investigation into a terrible crime is being complicated by an important archaeological digโand a steel hypodermic needle. And the unique laws and sacred religious rites of the Zuni people are throwing impassable roadblocks in Leaphorn's already twisted path, enabling a craven murderer to elude justice or, worse still, to kill again.
TONY HILLERMAN served as president of the Mystery Writers of America and received the Edgar and Grand Master Awards. His other honors include the Center for the American Indianโs Ambassador Award, the Spur Award for Best Western Novel, and the Navajo Tribal Council Special Friend of the Dineh Award. A native of Oklahoma, Tony Hillerman lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico, until his death in 2008.

โRiveting.โ
โHillerman knows his background well, and is skillfull enough to make it an integral park of the action. He has created an altogether believable set of characters.โ
โActor Michael Ansara, who has portrayed native Americans on television and in films, is the readerโฆHis reading is crisp and clear, with a touch of gravity.โ
โThe storyโs not the thingโitโs Hillermanโs anything but wooden Indians and the way in which he informs their way of life with affection and dignity.โ
