“I love T. Kingfisherโs comically dark, oddly cozy fantasies, and A Wizardโs Guide to Defensive Baking gets the recipe just right. Mona is a 14-year-old bread witch with a sourdough starter familiarโand sheโd be just fine making gingerbread men dance at her auntโs bakery if she hadnโt just found a dead body and gotten all mixed up in a wizard-killing plot that endangers her entire city. A wonderful fairy tale about how powerful your gifts are, no matter their shape or size, especially when you break the mold! Highly recommended for fans of Kikiโs Delivery Service, Legends & Lattes, and The Princess Bride! ”

Bookseller recommendation
“This captivating novel seamlessly blends elements of dark fantasy with cozy charm, resulting in a narrative that kept me engaged from start to finish. Mona's journey into the world of bread magic is both enchanting and wholly original, offering a fresh and imaginative concept that appealed to my senses, particularly as a professional baker myself. The author's adept characterization extends beyond Mona, with each character feeling fully realized and their actions thoughtfully rendered. While the story left me thoroughly satisfied, the inclusion of Mona's recipes at the end would have been a delightful addition, further enhancing the immersive experience. Overall, this book is a delightful treat for fans of fantasy and baking alike.”

Summary
Fourteen-year-old Mona isn't like the wizards charged with defending the city. She can't control lightning or speak to water. Her familiar is a sourdough starter and her magic only works on bread. She has a comfortable life in her aunt's bakery making gingerbread men dance.
But Mona's life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. An assassin is stalking the streets of Mona's city, preying on magic folk, and it appears that Mona is his next target. And in an embattled city suddenly bereft of wizards, the assassin may be the least of Mona's worries . . .
