A children's book by Caldecott medal winner Matt Cordell about a timid squirrel who makes a brave journey to help a relative who is ill.

ย

Evergreen the squirrel is afraid of many things: thunder, hawks, and the dark paths of Buckthorn Forest. But when her mother tasks Evergreen with delivering soup to her sick Granny Oak, the little squirrel must face her fears and make the journey.

ย

Along the way, Evergreen is met by other forest dwellers โ€“ some want to help her, but some want her motherโ€™s delicious soup! Itโ€™s up to Evergreen to stay the course, and those who help her will surprise and delight young readers.

ย

Using a style reminiscent of the work of William Steig and Arnold Lobel, Matthew Cordell creates a classic tale of bravery and love.

Matthew Cordellย received the Caldecott Medal forย Wolf in the Snow. He is also the creator of the picture booksย Trouble Gum,ย Another Brother,ย The Expedition, andย Bear Island, whichย School Library Journalย praised as, โ€œA poetically beautiful story of grief and healing,โ€ in a starred review. He lives in Gurnee, Illinois, with his family.ย Matthewcordell.com

Reviews

A poetically beautiful story of grief and healing mirrored in the natural world has a touch of magical realism as a young girl processes her emotions and realizes that endings lead to beginnings. "The musicality of [narrator] Helen Day's voice combined with her British accent provides an enticing entry into Buckthorn Forest [and] . . . excels in conveying Evergreen's growth on her journey as she overcomes dangers and obstacles." โ€“AudioFile Expand reviews
