From the author of Pura Bulpre Honor Book The Total Eclipse of Nestor Lopez comes an exciting new historical novel with an extra-terrestrial twist.

From Pura Belpré Honoree and Edgar Award Winner Adrianna Cuevas comes an out-of-this-world middle-grade adventure—based on true historical events, perfect for fans of The Goonies and Stranger Things.

All Pineda Matlage wants is to get through the school year and maybe pull an epic prank or two with his friends Junior, Ernesto, and Patsy. But class is disrupted when a slew of American soldiers descends upon their rural Texan town of Soledad. They’ll be carrying out a training exercise and taking over everything, from Pineda’s school to the local government.

But Pineda knows why they’re really here. For days, he’s hidden the strange creature who fell from the sky in his parents’ barn. He promised her he’d find her family and help them return home. But with soldiers now on every street corner and armed checkpoints across every road, reuniting his new friend with her missing parents seems an impossible task, especially when they realize that the army’s presence is really a coverup for capturing his alien friends—being observed in a laboratory by the US government for reasons of their own.

Enlisting the help of his friends, a Black soldier adjusting to a newly integrated army, and townspeople tired of the military’s destructive presence, Pineda and all of Soledad embark on an adventure none of them could have ever expected.

Adrianna Cuevas is a first-generation Cuban-American originally from Miami, Florida. After teaching Spanish and ESOL for sixteen years, she decided to pursue her passion for storytelling. When not writing, she enjoys hiking, traveling, and cooking lots of Cuban food with her husband and son in Austin, Texas.

Giordan Diaz is a New York City-based Cuban-American actor. He attended Barry University, where he majored in theater and earned a BFA with a specialization in acting. His voiceover work ranges from roles in video games in South Korea and educational cartoons to audiobooks.

Stephanie Willing is a voiceover artist based in New York. With an MFA in creative writing, classical training as a dancer, and a decade of experience treading the indie theater boards of New York City, she combines all her training and experience to bring each audiobook she narrates to life.

Sean Patrick Hopkins is an Earphones Award-winning narrator with over 250 titles to his name. A student of neuroscience and speech pathology, he combined his understanding of human behavior and vocal performance into a career in storytelling.

Erin DeWard is an Audie Award-winning audiobook narrator and a classically trained stage actor. A longtime company member of The Strange Bedfellows, a New York-based Shakespeare company, she can also be found working with The Children's Shakespeare Theater. She has been working in the audio industry as a writer, a voice talent, an advocate for media accessibility for people who are blind, and a trainer for over a decade. She is a proud and grateful member of SAG/AFTRA.

Cary Hite is an experienced actor and audiobook narrator who has had the pleasure of working with a number of publishing houses. An Earphones award-winner, he currently resides in New York City.

Reviews

Giordan Diaz gives a winning performance as Pineda, communicating his humor and kindness and switching easily between English and Spanish… P.J. Morgan gives Luisa an appropriately nervous, hesitant voice as she slowly learns English… the chorus of voices for other characters who chime in during the story's climax reinforces the message about the power of community.
