Halina Shore is a Polish-born forensic dentist who lives in Australia. When she travels to Poland to take part in the investigation of a war crime, she finds herself at the centre of a bitter struggle in a community that has been divided by a grim legacy. As the investigation proceeds, her professional assignment becomes a confronting personal odyssey as the truth about her own past begins to emerge.

Inspired by a true incident that took place in Poland in 1941 but was concealed for sixty years, Diane Armstrong's gripping novel is a detective story that is part mystery, part history and part forensic investigation. It is also a tale of love, loss and unimaginable sacrifice.

Diane Armstrong was born in Poland and arrived in Australia with her parents on the SS Derna in 1948. After gaining a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Sydney, she became a freelance journalist. Over 3,000 of her articles have been published in Australia and around the world, winning national and international awards.

Deidre Rubenstein is regarded as one of Australia's most accomplished actresses. As a stage actress, she has starred in productions with all major Australian theatre companies and has created three highly acclaimed one-woman shows which have toured Australia and overseas. Deidre won an Australian Film Industry (AFI) award for Best Actress in the mini-series Palace of Dreams and is also a multi-award-winning narrator. Audiobooks narrated for Bolinda include Elizabeth Costello by Nobel Prizeโ€“winning author J.M. Coetzee, Gilgamesh by Joan London, Elizabeth Harrower novels and various ABC titles.

Reviews

"A consummate writer at the top of her form." "A cleverly crafted mystery ... a good story, well told." "The best and worst of the human spirit are dredged up in this profoundly moving, compelling and superbly written story." "Secrets of WWII come to light in this novel inspired by actual events. Poland is a long way from Australia, and Halina Shore is completely unprepared for what she discovers when she lends her skills as a forensic dentist to the investigation of a war crime in the village of her ancestors. Deidre Rubenstein's sensitive reading reflects the strong emotions evoked by the unfolding events and the competing passions at the time the events occurred. Her facility with accents, timing, and pace adds dimension and intensity to the interplay between the original events and the attempt at current day re-examination. Rubenstein narrates with a sense of anticipation and inquiry befitting the mystery the investigators are struggling to solve." Expand reviews
