The year is 1957, and the place is Paris, where the psychic wounds of World War II have barely begun to heal. Saffie, a young German woman, becomes maid, then wife to Raphael, a privileged French musician who finds her remoteness provocative and irresistible. One day in the old Jewish quarter of the city, where she has taken Raphael's flute to be repaired, Saffie meets a Hungarian instrument maker - and all their lives are unexpectedly, dramatically altered.

Nancy Huston is a prize-winning author in both her native Canada and in France, where she has resided since 1973. She is the author of seven novels and numerous works of non-fiction. Born in Calgary, Alberta in 1953, she moved to New Hampshire when she was fifteen and was attending Sarah Lawrence College when she travelled to Paris for a year of study. She never left. Huston lives in Paris with her husband, Tzvetan Todorov, a philosopher and writer originally from Bulgaria, and their two children.

Richard Aspel is a talented narrator of children's and adult audiobooks. He trained and worked in London, before returning to Australia where he has worked extensively in television, theatre and radio. His television credits include Neighbours and Carson's Law, and he provided various voices for The Silver Brumby animated series. Richard was nominated for the prestigious Audie Award (US) for his narration of The Mark of the Angel by Nancy Huston.
