John Milton Hay was a US statesman and diplomat. He worked in a law office in Illinois - right next door to future president Abraham Lincoln. He served on the White House staff during the war, and was later appointed as Ambassador and Secretary of State under future presidents. Along with a novel and a biography of President Lincoln, he also wrote songs, ballads and poems.
