Summary

"El 19 de marzo y el 2 de mayo" is the third of Benito Pérez Galdós' Episodios Nacionales, this time focusing on the Aranjuez mutiny and the events of May 2, 1808, when the people of Madrid revolted against Napoleon's French troops and were violently repressed. As in previous installments, the adventures of Gabriel de Araceli weave together the historical events he witnesses, as an anonymous protagonist, with his own personal vicissitudes as he tries to free his beloved Inés from her ambitious uncles.
